  • No less than $150,000 Canadian dollars in equity for starting up or buying a business outside of the corporate boundaries of Yellowknife, Northwest Territories

You must also have a personal net worth of:

  • No less than $500,000 Canadian dollars if you are starting up or buying a business within the corporate boundaries of Yellowknife, Northwest Territories
  • No less than $250,000 Canadian dollars if you are starting up or buying a business outside the corporate boundaries of Yellowknife, Northwest Territories

Furthermore, you must have an additional amount of$75,000 Canadian dollars to be kept in a trust account and released upon completion of a Performance Agreement based on a business proposal. You must also demonstrate reasonable knowledge and understanding of the Northwest Territories and its economy,
 be able to demonstrate reasonable communication skills appropriate to the Northwest Territories, and have the necessary experience and education to successfully implement the business plan.

The Self-Employed Category

The self-employed category of the Nominee Program is designed to attract professionals who provide demanded services in the Northwest Territories, by establishing business outlets or professional practices. This category applies only to self-employed professionals. Professionals that are looking to be employed by a business or other organization should refer to the Skilled Worker Program.

As a self-employed applicant, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Be involved in a profession, which the Northwest Territories government has identified as a professional skill shortage. As well as satisfy any certification or accreditation requirements for the particular profession or occupation;
  • For regulated occupations, the nominee must meet all of the Northwest Territories regulatory authority requirements; if no regulatory authority exists within the NWT, then the Canadian licensing body will be consulted;
  • Demonstrate reasonable communication skills appropriate to the Northwest Territories;
  • Demonstrate reasonable knowledge and understanding of the Northwest Territories and its economy;
  • Demonstrate access to sufficient financial resources to start up and operate the specified professional practice, and be able to sufficiently fund ones’ self as well as any dependents for a period of at least six months; and
  • Submit a detailed business plan for the specified business or practice.
